Tip 1: Yoshihito Nishioka to beat Miomir Kecmanovic @ 4/6 with bet365

Yoshihito Nishioka has suffered first-round exits at the US Open in the last four years but he can buck that trend against Miomir Kecmanovic, who has lost five of his last matches and is struggling to put his best foot forward.

Nishioka eased past Kecmanovic 6-4 7-5 in Cincinnati earlier this month before pushing world number seven Hubert Hurkacz to a deciding set and he should be up to franking that form.

The Japanese ace has won three of the last four meetings between the pair and, with Kecmanovic having endured defeat in seven of his last eight hard-court encounters, this looks like another excellent opportunity for the favourite to prevail.

Tip 2: Alexander Bublik to beat Juncheng Shang @ Evs with bet365

Alexander Bublik is a difficult player to trust and he has played only two matches since Wimbledon but he is worth backing to overcome Chinese youngster Juncheng Shang, who was forced to withdraw prior to his last-16 duel with Lorenzo Sonego in Winston-Salem most recently.

Bublik is the world number 27, which is 50 places above Shang in the rankings, and on a going day he would be capable of going even higher than that.

The quirky Kazakhstani has all the shots in his repertoire and there was enough promise in recent defeats to Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz, two top-16 performers, to suggest he is in decent nick.

Bublik outclassed Shang 6-4 6-1 when they met at Indian Wells in March and he should be up to emulating that result.

Tip 3: Jasmine Paolini to beat Bianca Andreescu @ 1/2 with bet365

Women’s world number five Jasmine Paolini has been one of the form players this season and, having finished runner-up at the French Open and at Wimbledon, she is fully deserving of some success at the top table.

The impressive Italian has won both previous meetings with Bianca Andreescu, which includes a 7-6 6-1 victory at Wimbledon last month, and she is fancied to maintain that perfect record against the Canadian.

Andreescu did win this title in 2019 but she hasn’t produced that form for some time and she arrives in New York having lost three matches in a row.

Tip 4: Lulu Sun to beat Lucia Bronzetti @ 8/13 with bet365

Lulu Sun made a name for herself with a run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals last month and she has built on that since, making the semi-finals in Monterrey most recently.

The late-developing New Zealander is in a rich vein of form and she should be too powerful for Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, who has lost five of her last six matches.

Bronzetti was soundly beaten 7-6 6-3 by Sun in Cincinnati qualification earlier this month and it is tough to see how she can avenge such a defeat
