Tour Championship: Aberg can reel in FedEx Cup leaders

The final event of the PGA Tour season takes place this week, as the top 30 players battle it out for the FedEx Cup title.

The player that wins the Tour Championship on Sunday will collect a cool $25million in prize money – with Scottie Scheffler leading the way going into the event.

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta will be the venue for the final tournament, with the action getting underway on Thursday 29th August.

Scheffler holds a two-shot lead

Differing from other tournaments, a player’s place on the FedEx Cup standings will determine their starting position in the Tour Championship.

Having collected 6,615 points to date, Scottie Scheffler will start the Tour Championship out in front on 10-under-par, with Open champion Xander Schauffele second on -8 and Hideki Matsuyama in third on -7.

It then goes in increments through to the bottom ranked players of the 30-man field, who will start the Tour Championship on even par.

Europeans have won the last two FedEx Cups through Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy – can they make it three in a row in 2024?

Tip 1: Ludvig Aberg E/W @ 20/1 with Sky Bet

Although you have to go back to last November for his last PGA Tour success, Aberg has enjoyed another stellar year.

The Swede finished second in his debut appearance at the Masters, before securing a T12 finish at the US Open.

Barring a missed cut at the Open in tough weather conditions, Aberg’s recent form has also been impressive, with three top-fives and two top-20s since June.

The 24-year-old will start five shots behind Scheffler, but his T2 at last week’s BMW Championship suggests he will be flag searching from the start in Georgia.

If you back Aberg each-way with Sky Bet and he finishes in the top three, you receive 1/5 of the odds.

Tip 2: Patrick Cantlay E/W @ 35/1 with Paddy Power

Patrick Cantlay will have to overcome a six-shot deficit, with the US Ryder Cup star starting this week on -4.

Experience in this event though could be key for the man from California, who lifted the FedEx Cup title back in 2021.

Cantlay finished that week on -21, after shooting 10-under-par across the four days, holding off the challenge of Jon Rahm at East Lake.

The world number nine has been super consistent since the middle of June, recording two top-fives, two top-15s and a T25.

His final three rounds at the FedEx St. Jude Championship showed some good signs for this week’s test, with Cantlay carding 67, 66 and 66 from Friday to Sunday.

Cantlay is ranked 27th in Strokes Gained this season and if his putter can get hot, he is more than capable of challenging for top spot.

If you back Cantlay each-way with Paddy Power and he finishes in the top three, you receive 1/5 of the odds.

Tip 3: Sam Burns E/W @ 40/1 with Bet MGM

Starting six shots off the lead, Sam Burns is another who will go hunting for birdies early and the stats suggest he could be someone to close the gap on Scheffler.

The 28-year-old is second in Birdie Average on Tour and goes into this week’s event having carded the best final round at the BMW Championship, a seven-under-par 65.

Eight of Burns’ last 11 rounds have been sub-70 and his form line for the last three tournaments reads T2-T5-T12.

If you back Burns each-way with Bet MGM and he finishes in the top three, you receive 1/5 of the odds.
