Liverpool head to Germany looking to make it three wins from three in the new Champions League format when they face RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening.

The hosts are currently second in the Bundesliga, after a run of seven games unbeaten, but their European record is in stark contrast, having failed to win any of their last four in the Champions League.

Slot eyeing Reds’ Euro resurgence

Victories over AC Milan and Bologna have left Liverpool fifth in the Champions League table and on course to finish in the top eight of the new format.

In addition to that, the Reds also sit top of the Premier League with seven wins from eight games – the latest a 2-1 success over Chelsea.

Opponents Leipzig are one of eight teams without a point going into Gameweek Three and seeking a much-needed win.

Their start to the competition is even more surprising when you consider they are unbeaten domestically and are only behind Bayern Munich on goal difference.

The Germans have endured a tough run of fixtures in Europe though, losing 2-1 at Atletico Madrid before going down 3-2 at home to Juventus last time out.

Marco Rose’s men have responded to that Juve defeat with back-to-back league wins on the road, winning at both Heidenheim and Mainz without conceding a goal.

Tip 1 – Darwin Nunez to score at anytime

Liverpool are set to be without first-choice central striker Diogo Jota for the trip to Germany, after the Portuguese ace suffered a rib injury.

Jota was forced off during the first half of Sunday’s win over Chelsea and Anfield and wasn’t able to train with the rest of the squad on Tuesday.

That means Darwin Nunez, who replaced him against the Blues, is likely to start on Wednesday and the Uruguayan arguably looks better suited to European football than the Premier League.

The former Benfica man has scored nine goals in 12 starts in Europe for the Merseysiders, since joining in 2022, while Nunez’s league stats read 21 goals in 42 starts.

Tip 2 – Ibrahima Konate to be carded

Ibrahima Konate has been impressive since winning his place back in the Liverpool team and is now first-choice defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk.

The Frenchman scored in the 3-1 win in Milan on Gameweek One, but he has also been booked in both of the Reds’ Champions League fixtures this term.

Konate has also been cautioned on three occasions in the Premier League and will have his hands full with Leipzig’s Slovenian star Benjamin Sesko.

It’s also worth noting that there have been four or more cards in each of the last 11 Champions League games involving Liverpool, with three of the back four receiving yellows against Bologna last time out.
