Liverpool sit top of the revamped Champions League, with the Reds the only club in the 36-strong table to have won their first four fixtures.
Defending European champions Real are down in 18th place with two wins and two defeats so far, so Carlo Ancelotti’s side have work to do if they are to eventually secure a top-eight place and a guaranteed spot in the knockout stages.
Real have won seven of the last eight meetings between the two sides, including when triumphing over the Reds in the 208 and 2022 Champions League finals.
However, Liverpool approach Wednesday’s game in fantastic form after winning 16 of their 18 games in all competitions under new head coach Arne Slot.
They are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and have won their last seven home games, while Real are second in La Liga, four points behind leaders Barcelona.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to return to the hosts’ squad but is unlikely to start, while Alisson and Diogo Jota are still absent through injury.
Real are without key forward Vinicius Junior for the trip to Anfield after he picked up a leg injury, while Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Rodrygo and Aurelien Tchouameni are all on the sidelines for the visitors.
Liverpool’s stunning form this season means they are favourites to come out on top in what looks set to be an entertaining game.Liverpool won their first two home games in the competition without conceding, as first Bologna were dispatched 2-0 and then Bayer Leverkusen were hammered 4-0 at Anfield.
Real are likely to be tougher opponents, though, as Ancelotti’s experienced side attempt to get their Champions League campaign back on track following a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to AC Milan on Matchday Four.
Los Blancos have only failed to score in two of their 18 matches in all competitions this season and their attacking talent is fearsome. Even with Vinicius Junior absent, Ancelotti still has Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler and Endrick to call upon, so the Spanish giants look more than capable of getting on the scoresheet on Wednesday.
However, the Reds can make it five from five in the Champions League by finally getting one over Real, recording a statement victory in the process.
Luis Diaz has had a strong campaign for Liverpool, scoring nine goals in all competitions, including three in the Champions League, which all came against Leverkusen.
The Colombia international was among the substitutes who came on in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Southampton, so he seems likely to start against Real as Slot continues to rotate him with Cody Gakpo down the left.
Diaz was lively against Saints despite only featuring for 29 minutes, attempting three shots, with one on target, and he could be the man to get the hosts up and running against Real.
