With La Liga now back in action, we caught up with former Barcelona midfielder Eusebio Sacristán. Sacristán, who went onto become Frank Rijkaard’s assistant at Barcelona before taking over the B team, spoke with Compare.bet about Neymar’s ‘best years’ at Barca, Quique Setién’s future and the emergence of Martin Braithwaite as a potentially pivotal member of the squad.
CB: During Guardiola’s tenure, he gave 28 La Masia graduates their debut. In 2010, academy products Iniesta, Xavi and Messi were podium finishers in Ballon d’Or. Obviously, these are generational talents and we can’t expect that level of talent to be replicated so soon. However, since Guardiola’s resignation, the flow of players into the first team has dramatically subsided. Today we see many promising La Masia graduates progressing their careers elsewhere. Two players you worked with at Barcelona B come to mind – Adama Traore and Alex Grimaldo. What do you think the problem is?
ES: It involves the philosophy and circumstances of the club. There was a time when many graduates could be part of the main team. These were players that acquired the vision and methodology of the academy that are also implemented in the club. With Rijkaard we already had an idea of how it would look, once we restored the essence of the club that was present years ago, when Cruyff’s philosophies were in practice. A certain methodology was used in the academy for many years, so eventually, players with certain characteristics appeared and began to take center stage at that time.
This impressive generation of players reached their peak when Guardiola arrived as a coach. They won the Champions League twice, lifted six trophies in that one season, and those La Masia graduates played a big part in that. They were committed to Guardiola’s ideas and football philosophy. Everything fell into place perfectly, from the arrival of Guardiola and the rise of those players, so they could deliver the most important moments in the history of the club.
Guardiola wanted to complete the roster of established players with graduates, although it is true that not all of them ended up playing prominent roles because others had already developed a reputation that made them permanent players.
There’s since been a series of management changes at the club, but the group of integral players at the club has continued to maintain the philosophy and style of play. The club has also tried to promote continuity by working with coaches who know this philosophy, but lately, the squad is filled out with players who are more established. I think this is where the change occurs: when the club begins relying on more established players instead of graduates to play those spare minutes. For me, that has been an important change that has taken place lately.
However, a group of those players who appeared in the first team under Guardiola remain. As such, so does their knowledge, picked up from their coaches who understand Barcelona’s philosophy. Piqué, Busquets, Messi, Jordi Alba… they are players who continue to uphold that philosophy that Johan Cruyff once implemented.
CB: Do you think the decline of academy player debuts will impact Barcelona’s future, with the long term servants of the club such as Messi, Pique and Alba coming to the tail end of their careers?
ES: The presence of graduates helps the team maintain a sense of identity, especially when new players join because they can identify the club’s values through these players. These players have a deep understanding of the club’s identity, strategy and philosophy. It’s a great bonus that was maximised during the era where Guardiola rounded everything off.
Of course, changing this philosophy a little and relying on more established high-profile players for the squad is an option for the future, but this means sacrificing this sense of identity.
In any case, Barça still maintains a few players with that essence. They’re an asset to the club, as they allow Barcelona to maintain the same philosophy over the years.
CB: Barcelona have attempted to somewhat prevent a period of transition by spending big on promising talents. They smashed their transfer record to sign Coutinho, spending over 100 million euros. It’s clearly not worked out for either party – what went wrong?
ES: Yes, there’s a risk: if the new player, considered to warrant a prominent role due to their reputation, does not feature prominently, there may be a little setback, as the situation isn’t as good as they previously thought. But not everyone can play an important role.
The decision to sign any player is one made with the understanding that it will benefit the overall performance of the team. However, the coach has to manage the expectations of all these high-profile players – that’s not easy. It might go well and the players provide a high level of quality and performance, but it can also go the other way, where some players aren’t satisfied because they can’t play a leading role.
Much like Coutinho, his compatriot Neymar seems to be constantly in the headlines linked with a move in the transfer window. While he has enjoyed great domestic success in France, he hasn’t been able to replicate the triumphant 2014/15 Champions League campaign he had with Barcelona. Some would argue that he was at his best during his Barca years. Do you agree and where do you rank him among the all-time Barcelona greats?
The best moment of his career in terms of performance and popularity was with Barça. Barça is a great place to showcase your talent and brings out the best in the players. The issue is that he, at a certain moment, made a decision. He could have continued at Barça with that great level and waited for his moment to become one of the most important players, but he decided to go to PSG. Ligue 1 does not have the same impact as La Liga, which means that he can continue to do important things, but not have the same impact.
During his Barca days, it seemed only a matter of time before he would succeed Messi and Ronaldo as the next perennial Ballon d’Or favourite. If he does make the move back to the Camp Nou, do you think he will win the award?
He would have a better chance because in recent years La Liga has been more prestigious than Ligue 1. Plus, Barça has won several European cups in recent times, which made it easier for their players to earn individual honours.
CB: As Ronaldo and Messi play through the twilight of their respective careers, Neymar will likely face competition from a new generation of players. His PSG teammate Mbappe will surely be up for contention in the coming years. Another forward who has experienced a similar rise to prominence this season is Erling Haaland – do you think he’ll be in the Ballon d’Or conversation soon?
ES: Neymar is a great player and he will always be up for contention, but it is undoubtedly important what his club does. If PSG managed to do something important in the Champions League, he would undoubtedly be one of the candidates. In addition, those two players, Mbappé and Erling Haaland could reach the pinnacle of the sport later in their career and become frontrunners to win the award.
CB: Quique Setien has said he has no doubts over Messi’s fitness with La Liga returning. However, he has never had to face such a demanding schedule. With 11 games in five weeks, how do you think this intense end to the season will impact his level of play and the title race overall?
Squad depth and time management will be important. Messi has been showing for many years that he is at a good physical level and that he can play perfectly well, even if there are a lot of games to play in the coming month. He is a very intelligent player, aware that the coach has to manage, and he also knows how to manage himself to perform at the highest level in these matches.
In addition, being in a team with a high possession of the ball means it’s more likely that the opposition will be worn out before Barcelona are. I think teams with a possession-based philosophy won’t be hit as hard in the remainder of the season because they’ll be able to dominate the ball and wear out the opposition.
CB: While it seems Barcelona and Real Madrid are yet again set for top-two finishes, these are far from vintage sides – certainly a long way off the teams led by Guardiola and Mourinho. Many would have seen this as a prime opportunity for your former club, Atletico, to capitalise. They’ve invested heavily in attacking players – Lemar (3), Costa (8), Joao Felix (4) and Vitolo (3), but they’ve combined for just 17 goals in their time at the club. The success of Atletico during the Simeone era is undeniable, but do you think it’s time to move on from him and his style of play?
ES: I’m not going to give an opinion on that but I will say that, since Simeone was appointed, Atlético Madrid has been considered one of the most important teams in Europe and in the world, with very good results and a very efficient style of play. That style, while different from that of other teams, has delivered results. In addition, the players have a close bond with their coach.
CB: TV viewers were offered the choice between an ‘enhanced’ version, showing virtual stands populated by computer-generated fans along with audio produced by the creators of FIFA, or a natural broadcast. Which option did you pick?
ES: When I watched the enhanced version, it gave me a good feeling. It’s better than watching the game with empty seats. The background sound of the crowds, at least on television, is also more attractive. German broadcasts, without the public or background noise, seemed more soulless.
CB: We’ve seen players in the NBA fitted with microphones to be worn during matches so we can hear snippets of audio from them during intermissions in the broadcast, do you think some variation of this would be a more entertaining option for fans watching at home?
ES: As coaches, we’re a little reluctant to be so revealing, as it can be a distraction for the players, a small loss of concentration. We prefer that players have maximum concentration and only focus on the game.
In the United States, NBA players are more accustomed to these kinds of features as part of the broadcast, but we’re not so used to it over here – I don’t think we’d like it.
Having said that, you always have to be open to innovations that can improve the experience for fans, but I think the best way to achieve this is to do it without negatively influencing the player’s performance.
CB: In the Bundesliga, we have seen home advantage disappear. Home teams have won only 10 from a possible 46 (as of 11/06/2020) in these ‘ghost games’ in front of empty stands. How much impact do you think fans have an impact on players, psychologically?
ES: It is clear that there are supporters that give a lot, creating an atmosphere that spurs on their home team. This impacts the intensity and rhythm of the game, so it will certainly have an influence on the players.
With everything to play for including the title, European places and relegation, this loss of home advantage could have a significant impact on the conclusion of the season – which teams stand to lose the most?
I don’t think it will ultimately be decisive, but in some cases, it could lower a team’s chances. At the end of the day, the stronger teams will show their quality. This will have more of an impact on lower-quality teams, in terms of pace and energy.
CB: With Ronaldo and Messi in different leagues, their once fierce rivalry has died down. With both players in their 30s, it seems natural to look for the next big stars from the current crop of players – which young players are the most exciting prospects at the moment?
ES: Mbappé has spent a few seasons at a very high level and also gives the impression that he has the mindset of a great player, which is very important. He is one of those players who make you feel that they could be part of a new generation that takes over in a few years from the current crop of top players who are in the last years of their career.
It is clear that we have experienced a rivalry in recent years between Messi and Cristiano to be the best player in the world. Now it remains to be seen who the torch will be passed onto.
Undoubtedly, Mbappé could be one of those players, although I do not know if he will be at their level because it will be difficult to find a player like Messi so soon. It is difficult to think that someone can reach that level. However, due to his age, performance and mentality, Mbappé could undoubtedly be one of them.
It remains to be seen if Neymar is able to find his best again and if he still has the mentality to reach that level. He can also be one of them, but there are more great young players coming through, so there’s a high level of competition.
On the other hand, I’m noticing that there are now fewer teams only led by individuals. I think it is good. A player assuming that status is dictated by the media more than anything else, I think the important thing is that the teams get their entire squad to play as one. Because if you win the Champions League, as Liverpool has done, all the team’s players are important and there is hardly one that clearly stands out. Yes, there is Salah, but there are also Mané and Firmino, all of these important players but none more important than the team as a unit.
I think that when Messi or Cristiano are not there, there will be players who will stand out and who will be the most important player of the season, but maybe not one who is clearly above the rest. We will have to get used to a different player winning that award each season.
CB: Another player who’s given a second chance this season after injuries is Luis Suarez. How much does his return change things in the title race?
ES: Not so much change, but it will be helpful for Barça. Suarez has shown his importance in the team, he is a very important player because he is a true scorer, he is a goal-getter with tremendous efficiency. He is rested and well prepared, so he will surely return with a lot of enthusiasm and will help Barça in the title race during the next month or month and a half. Having Suarez is a plus for the team.
CB: He’s been a huge success at the club, but he’s clearly past his peak abilities at 33 years of age. Is it time to move on?
ES: Replacing players within a team is a very complicated process. Everything has to be studied in detail. Suarez, regardless of his age, is a player with great efficiency and an important role in the team and, if he continues like this, they will have to keep trusting him. However, I’m sure Barça is not only thinking about the present but also about the future and any possible personnel changes that may happen.
CB: The headlines seem to point to Inter’s Lautaro Martinez as a Suarez replacement. Do you think he would be a good fit with Messi, Griezmann and co.?
ES: I don’t know —we are talking about a rumour— at Barça there are many players who can fit in. The emergence of Braithwaite seems interesting to me since he can take on an increasingly important role at Barça. If Braithwaite continues to progress and manages to take on an important role, Barça will have a player who can help a lot in that position.
And then, let’s see how the whole season goes. If things end well, all this can continue to take an increasingly better shape: Griezmann’s performance should grow, he should have more and more prominence and, in some way, both Messi and Luis Suárez will have replacements that can have a positive impact on the team’s performance.
CB: Meetings between UEFA officials over the past few weeks have seen various scenarios put forward, including completing the tournament in two-legged ties as originally planned. But recently, the idea of a last-eight mini-tournament has been floated, similar to the Club World Cup concept. How do you think the tournament should conclude?
ES: I think that the mini-tournament could be a good option given the current circumstances. It would also mean avoiding travel and, since there would be no fans in attendance, the fact that all teams can play in the same venue would be attractive for viewers.
CB: Before this season’s Champions League campaign was interrupted, we saw Barcelona grab an away goal in their 1-1 draw away at Napoli in the round of 16. After having three-goal deficits overturned in consecutive seasons against Roma and Liverpool, do you think this Barcelona side has what it takes to win the tournament?
ES: This long break has been good for Barça, it’s given them time to get familiar with the way Quique Setién wants them to play. The change of coach could have caused a dip in form while the club adapted to the new tactics that Quique Setién wanted to implement. I also see that the players are comfortable, that they feel good about his ideas and I think that they will have a good chance to secure another trophy.
CB: It’s widely known that Quique Setien wasn’t the first choice when appointed as manager, with Ronald Koeman and Xavi declining offers from the club. He’s overseen eight wins from his 12 games in charge, but in those games, his side has only scored more than two goals in a game on three occasions – a far cry from the free-scoring Barca sides of the past. Do you think winning La Liga will be enough for Setien to keep his job?
ES: I think they have hired him for continuity, and I see a very good connection between him and the players. The feeling is positive, I see him staying and I think he has found an ideal group to implement his style of play and philosophy.
CB: It’s been five years since Barcelona won the Champions League, the longest drought of its kind in the Messi era. Two of the club’s five victories came under Pep Guardiola, who hasn’t won the trophy in almost a decade. With his side, Manchester City, facing a Champions League ban, his future seems uncertain. If the club and manager were to be reunited, which party do you think stands to gain the most?
ES: I don’t know, that’s a very complicated assumption. I see him very comfortable at City. Sure, this is a big setback, but I see he is very close with the team. He has created something great and is very comfortable with Txiki and Ferrán Soriano – they all understand each other very well. What you’re asking me is a situation that isn’t realistic, at least for now.
CB: Cuando Guardiola estaba como entrenador, permitió debutar a 28 canteranos de La Masía. En 2010, jugadores salidos de este centro de formación como Iniesta, Xavi o Messi ocuparon el podio del Balón de Oro. Obviamente, estamos hablando de toda una generación de talentos y no podemos esperar que tal nivel se repita tan pronto. Sin embargo, desde que Guardiola abandonó el club, el flujo de jugadores que pasan al primer equipo ha caído de forma muy notable. Hoy vemos cómo muchos jugadores que se curtieron en La Masía progresan en sus carreras en otros clubes. Se nos ocurren dos nombres de jugadores con los que trabajaste en el Barcelona B: Adama Traore y Alex Grimaldo. ¿Cuál crees que es el problema?
ES: Va asociado a la filosofía y a las circunstancias. Hubo una época en la que salió mucha gente de la cantera que pudo conformar un equipo prácticamente titular con la aparición de muchos de esos jugadores que irrumpieron con unas propuestas futbolísticas muy alineadas con lo que es el trabajo de la cantera y la metodología implantada en el club. Apareció una generación de jugadores fantástica que hizo que todo llegase a su punto álgido cuando Guardiola llega como entrenador. Se consigue una temporada con seis títulos con una presencia muy importante de jugadores de la casa que va asociada a la idea de juego de Guardiola. Con Rijkaard tuvimos ya una presentación de lo que era volver a la esencia del club de años atrás que la filosofía de Johan Cruyff implantó. La metodología empleada en la cantera durante muchos años hizo que fuesen apareciendo jugadores con unas determinadas características y que empiezan a tomar protagonismo en aquella época. Con Guardiola llegan a su máximo apogeo, consiguiendo seis títulos en una temporada, además de dos Champions y convirtiéndose en jugadores muy, muy importantes. Se encuadró todo, con la llegada de Guardiola y la aparición de esos jugadores, a que se viviesen los momentos más importantes de la historia del club.
Guardiola quiso completar la plantilla de jugadores consagrados con canteranos, salidos de la casa, aunque es cierto que no todos llegaron a tener protagonismo porque otros ya habían adquirido un estatus que los convirtió en jugadores fijos.
A partir de ahí, hay una serie de cambios en el club a nivel de dirección deportiva, y esa base de jugadores importantes ha seguido manteniendo esa idea y filosofía de juego. El club también ha intentado estar cerca de entrenadores que conociesen dicha filosofía, a la que se ha intentado dar continuidad, pero es cierto que ha llegado un momento en que se ha decidido completar la plantilla con jugadores importantes y consagrados de un mismo nivel o estatus. Creo que el cambio se produce sobre todo ahí: cuando se apuesta por jugadores más consagrados en vez de jugadores de la casa para jugar esos minutos secundarios.
Para mí, ése ha sido el cambio importante que ha habido últimamente. Pero la base de aquellos jugadores que aparecieron en el primer equipo, donde aprendieron de los entrenadores el concepto de juego que el Barça ha adquirido en los últimos años, se mantiene. El club todavía mantiene a jugadores que lo tienen muy asimilado como Piqué, Busquets, Messi, Jordi Alba… son jugadores que mantienen ese hilo conductor de la filosofía que en su día implantó Johan Cruyff.
CB: ¿Crees que el descenso en el número de canteranos debutantes tendrá un impacto en el futuro del Barcelona, siendo que futbolistas de largo recorrido como Messi, Piqué y Alba podrían estar llegando al final de sus carreras?
La presencia de muchos canteranos da al equipo un sentimiento de identidad, ya que muchos nuevos jugadores se sienten identificados con los valores del club. Aportan un profundo sentimiento de identidad y conocen la idea de juego y su filosofía. Eso es un valor añadido que tiene su máxima expresión en la era en que Guardiola cuadró y redondeó todo.
Efectivamente, cambiar un poco la línea y apostar por que en la plantilla haya jugadores importantes, de prestigio y un gran estatus es una idea de futuro, pero de alguna manera eso también sacrifica este sentimiento de identidad.
De todas maneras, el Barça todavía mantiene unos cuántos jugadores con esa esencia que yo considero una base importante para que el club haya podido seguir en esa línea durante todos estos años.
CB: El Barcelona ha intentado evitar de alguna manera un periodo de transición al gastar mucho dinero en grandes promesas. Rompieron su récord de fichajes con Coutinho, en el que se gastaron más de 100 millones de euros. Está claro que no ha funcionado para ninguna de las partes, ¿qué fue mal?
Sí, se corre ese riesgo: si el jugador que se ficha, considerado muy importante y con mucho prestigio, luego no tiene la participación que él desea, puede aparecer un pequeño contratiempo. Estos jugadores quieren tener su protagonismo y, si no lo llegan a tener, la opción no acaba de resultar tan buena como se pensaba. Pero no todos pueden tener ese mismo protagonismo, lo que puede suponer un pequeño hándicap.
En principio, es una apuesta que se hace entendiendo que va a beneficiar en el rendimiento global del equipo. Sin embargo, el entrenador tiene que gestionar a todos esos jugadores importantes, algo que no es fácil. Puede que salga bien y se aporte un nivel de calidad y rendimiento altos, pero también puede suceder que los jugadores no estén satisfechos porque no hay tiempo para el protagonismo de todos.
CB: Como le pasa a Coutinho, su compatriota Neymar parece estar siempre en los titulares sobre su traspaso en el mercado de fichajes. Y aunque sí disfrutó de un gran éxito en Francia, no ha sido capaz de replicar la campaña de la Champions 2014/15 que tuvo con el Barcelona. Algunos dirían que, durante sus años en el Barça, él estaba en su mejor momento. ¿Estás de acuerdo? ¿Dónde lo colocarías entre los grandes del Barça de todos los tiempos?
El mejor momento de su carrera a nivel de rendimiento y popularidad fue en el Barça. El Barça es un gran escaparte y saca lo mejor de los jugadores. El tema está en que él, en un momento determinado, toma una decisión: podría haber seguido en el Barça con un gran nivel y esperar a que llegara su momento para convertirse en uno de los jugadores más importantes, pero decidió el camino del PSG. La liga francesa no tiene la misma repercusión que la española y esto ha supuesto que él pueda seguir haciendo cosas importantes, pero no con la misma repercusión.
CB: Durante sus días en el Barça, parecía cuestión de tiempo que sucediera a Messi y a Ronaldo como el eterno favorito al Balón de Oro. Si volviera al Camp Nou, ¿crees que lo ganaría?
Tendría más posibilidades porque en los últimos años la liga española ha construido un mayor prestigio que la francesa. Además, el Barça viene de ganar varias copas de Europa en las últimas décadas, lo que facilita que sus jugadores lo tengan más fácil para conseguir un título importante a nivel individual.
CB: Mientras Ronaldo y Messi juegan ya en el ocaso de sus respectivas carreras, Neymar tendrá que enfrentarse a una nueva generación de jugadores. Seguramente su compañero en el PSG Mbappe será un duro rival durante los próximos años. Otro delantero que ha despuntado esta temporada es Erling Haaland. ¿Crees que tendrá papeletas para el Balón de Oro?
Es un gran jugador y siempre va a estar ahí, en la quiniela, pero indudablemente es importante lo que haga su club. Si el PSG consiguiese hacer algo importante en la Champions, indudablemente sería uno de los candidatos, pero eso pasa por que su club consiga algo importante. Además esos dos jugadores, Mbappé y Erling Haaland, en un futuro podrían estar ahí, en esos primeros puestos, y ser de los que más opciones tengan de conseguir este galardón individual.
CB: Quique Setién ha dicho que no tiene duda alguna sobre el estado de forma de Messi durante el regreso de La Liga. Sin embargo, él nunca ha tenido que enfrentarse a un calendario tan exigente. Teniendo que afrontar 11 partidos en cinco semanas, ¿cómo crees que un fin de temporada tan intenso afectará a su nivel de juego y, en general, a la carrera por el título?
Va a ser importante la gestión de las plantillas y de los minutos. Messi lleva muchos años demostrando que está a un buen nivel físico y que puede responder perfectamente en este mes que falta, aunque tenga que jugar mucho. Es un jugador muy inteligente, consciente de que el entrenador tiene que hacer su gestión, y además sabe gestionarse a sí mismo para rendir al máximo nivel en estos partidos.
Además, estar en un equipo con una alta posesión del balón provocará no su desgaste, sino el de los rivales. Creo que los equipos con esa filosofía no se verán tan perjudicados en lo que queda de temporada porque son capaces de tener más el balón, dominarlo y hacer que los rivales sean los que se desgasten.
CB: Si bien parece que el Barcelona y el Real Madrid siguen siendo los favoritos para los dos primeros puestos, parecen estar lejos de lo que eran anteriormente (desde luego muy lejos de ser lo que eran con Guardiola y Mourinho). Muchos habrían visto esto como una excelente oportunidad para que tu antiguo club, el Atlético, progresara. Han invertido mucho en atacantes: Lemar (que ha marcado 2 goles con el club), Costa (7), Joao Felix (4) y Vitolo (3), pero la suma combinada de todos ellos solo alcanza los 16 goles. El éxito del Atlético durante la era Simeone es innegable pero, ¿crees que es hora de alejarse de su estilo de juego?
No voy a entrar a valorar eso pero sí diré que, desde que Simeone es entrenador, el Atlético de Madrid ha conseguido posicionarse entre los equipos europeos más importantes y del mundo, con unos resultados muy buenos y con una gran eficacia en su juego. Digamos que con su estilo, diferente al de otros equipos, se ha demostrado una buena eficacia en cuanto a resultados. Además los jugadores están muy identificados con su entrenador.
CB: A los telespectadores se les ha dado a elegir entre dos versiones de los partidos: la primera, una versión ‘mejorada’ que muestra unos stands virtuales con hinchas generados por ordenador y un audio producido por la FIFA; la segunda, una emisión natural. ¿Con qué opción te quedas?
Cuando he visto los asientos con simulación de público he tenido una buena sensación. Es mejor que con los asientos vacíos. El sonido de fondo de la afición, al menos por televisión, también resulta más atractivo. Las retransmisiones alemanas, sin el público ni el ruido de fondo, parecían más desangeladas.
CB: Hemos visto a jugadores de la NBA con micrófonos durante los partidos para que podamos escuchar fragmentos de audio durante los intermedios en la retransmisión, ¿crees que una variación de este tipo sería una opción atrayente para los hinchas que ven el partido desde casa?
Los entrenadores somos un poquito reacios a abrirnos a aquello que forme parte del espectáculo, ya que puede provocar una desconexión en los jugadores, una pequeña pérdida de concentración. Preferimos que los jugadores estén concentrados al máximo, que estén pensando en el partido.
CB: En Estados Unidos llevan ya muchos años en los que la NBA tiene un punto grande de espectáculo y los jugadores están como bastante educados para esa circunstancia, pero aquí no estamos tan acostumbrados a ello. En principio, no nos agradaría.
Siempre hay que estar abiertos a las innovaciones que puedan facilitar el espectáculo y que el aficionado se lo pase bien, pero creo que la mejor manera de conseguirlo es prescindir de todas estas opciones que puedan restar en el rendimiento del jugador.
CB: En la Bundesliga se percibe que ha desaparecido la ventaja de jugar en casa. Los equipos locales solo han ganado 10 partidos de los 46 posibles (a fecha 11/06/2020) en estos ‘encuentros fantasma’ que se juegan en estadios vacíos. ¿Qué impacto psicológico crees que tiene la grada en los jugadores?
Está claro que hay aficiones que empujan mucho, esa presión ambiental da un plus al equipo que juega en casa. Ese valor añadido incrementa el ánimo, la intensidad y el ritmo de juego, así que sin duda tendrá influencia.
CB: Con todo por jugar, incluyendo el título, los puestos europeos y el descenso, la pérdida de la ventaja local podría tener un impacto significativo al final de la temporada, ¿qué equipos tienen más que perder?
En algunos casos en concreto podría restar algunas posibilidades, pero no creo que sea algo determinante sino una circunstancia más. Indudablemente a los equipos más fuertes les bastará con su juego. Influirá en equipos menos sólidos en términos de ritmo y energía.
CB: Con Ronaldo y Messi en ligas diferentes, su otrora rivalidad sin tregua ha desaparecido. Con ambos jugadores en la treintena, resulta imposible no buscar a las próximas grandes estrellas entre la actual cosecha de jugadores. ¿Qué jóvenes futbolistas tienen las mejores perspectivas en estos momentos?
Mbappé lleva unas temporadas en un nivel altísimo y además da la impresión de que tiene la mentalidad de ser un jugador grande, lo que es muy importante. Es uno de esos jugadores que te hacen intuir que podrían ser ese nombre de nueva generación que toma el relevo en pocos años de jugadores ya muy importantes que están, digamos, en los últimos años de su carrera.
Está claro que hemos vivido una rivalidad estos últimos años de dos jugadores importantísimos como han sido Messi y Cristiano por conseguir eso que ansían: ser el mejor jugador del mundo. Ahora está por ver quién tomará el relevo de esa bandera, esa antorcha.
Indudablemente entre esos jugadores Mbappé podría llegar a serlo, aunque no sé si al nivel de ellos, porque va a ser difícil encontrar tan pronto a un jugador que llegue al nivel de Messi. Está siendo algo tan grande que se hace difícil pensar que alguien pueda llegar a ese nivel. Sin embargo, por su edad, rendimiento y mentalidad, indudablemente Mbappé podría ser uno de ellos.
Está por ver si Neymar es capaz de encontrar de nuevo su mejor punto y si sigue teniendo esa mentalidad de poder conseguir ese estatus. También puede ser otro de ellos, aunque van apareciendo jugadores jóvenes importantes que demuestran que la calidad media de todos los jugadores es muy alta.
Por otro lado, también estoy viendo y creo que es bueno, que el equipo está cada vez más por encima de las individualidades. Que más allá de que un jugador pueda asumir ese estatus, que es más mediático que otra cosa, creo que lo importante es que los equipos consigan que toda su plantilla vaya a una. Porque si ganas la Champions, como ha hecho el Liverpool, todos los jugadores del equipo son importantes y casi no hay uno que destaque en exceso. Sí, está Salah, pero también están Mané y Firmino, todos ellos jugadores importantes pero con el equipo por encima de esas individualidades.
Creo que, cuando no estén Messi o Cristiano, habrá un jugador que destacará y que será el más importante de la temporada, pero a lo mejor no uno que esté claramente por encima de los demás. Tendremos que acostumbrarnos a que un jugador diferente adquiera ese estatus cada temporada.
CB: Otro jugador que tendrá una segunda oportunidad esta temporada, tras las lesiones, es Luis Suárez. ¿Cuánto cambia su regreso las cosas en la lucha por el título?
Tanto como cambiar no, pero sí que es una ayuda para el Barça. Suárez ha demostrado su importancia en el equipo, es un jugador muy importante porque es un auténtico goleador, es un hombre gol con una eficacia tremenda. Él ha estado descansado y se ha preparado bien, así que seguro que volverá con muchas ganas y ayudará al Barça a conseguir los títulos en juego durante el próximo mes o mes y medio. Contar con Suárez es un plus para el equipo.
CB: Ha tenido un enorme éxito en el club, pero claramente con 33 años ya no está en el pico de su rendimiento. ¿Es hora de buscar otros horizontes?
El proceso de renovación de un equipo es algo muy particular en lo que los clubs participan. Todo hay que ir viéndolo paso a paso. Suárez, independientemente de su edad, es un jugador con mucha eficacia y un protagonismo importante en el equipo y, de seguir así, habrá que seguir confiando en él. Seguro que el Barça está pensando en el presente pero también en el futuro y en las posibles renovaciones que pueda haber.
CB: Los titulares señalan a Lautaro Martínez, del Inter, como el sustituto de Suárez. ¿Crees que encajaría bien con Messi, Griezmann y compañía?
No lo sé, estamos hablando de un rumor, en el Barça hay muchos jugadores que pueden encajar. Me parece una circunstancia interesante la aparición de Braithwaite, ya que puede adquirir un papel cada vez más importante en el Barça. Si Braithwaite sigue con esa progresión y logra tener un protagonismo importante, el Barça contará con un jugador que puede ayudar mucho en esa posición.
Y luego a ver cómo va toda la temporada. Si las cosas acaban muy bien, todo esto puede seguir cogiendo cada vez una mejor forma: que el rendimiento de Griezmann vaya creciendo, que este chico vaya teniendo cada vez más protagonismo y, que de alguna manera, tanto Messi como Luis Suárez tengan ahí complementos que pueden hacer que el rendimiento del equipo siga mejorando.
CB: Durante las últimas semanas, diversas reuniones entre miembros de la UEFA han considerado varios escenarios, como completar el torneo en eliminatorias a doble partido como se había planteado originalmente. Sin embargo, recientemente se ha rumoreado la idea de un minitorneo entre los últimos ocho, un concepto parecido al del Mundial de Clubes. ¿Cómo crees que debería terminar el torneo?
Creo que lo del minitorneo con ocho equipos podría estar bien dadas las circunstancias y los cambios por la situación. Además evitaría viajes y, puesto que no habría público, que todos puedan jugar en una misma sede puede ser interesante y atractivo, también para el espectador.
CB: Antes de que se interrumpiera la temporada de la Champions League, vimos a un Barcelona lograr un gol fuera de casa en su empate a uno contra el Nápoles en octavos de final. Después de que les remontaran tres goles en temporadas consecutivas contra el Roma y el Liverpool, ¿crees que este Barcelona está haciéndolo bien como para ganar el torneo?
Todo este tiempo de parón le ha venido bien al Barça para seguir afianzando su propuesta. El cambio de entrenador podría haberle restado en resultados porque tenía que adaptarse a las nuevas propuestas de juego que Quique Setién quería implantar. Además veo que los jugadores están a gusto, que se sienten bien con su propuesta y creo que va a tener seguro opciones importantes de poder conseguir otro título.
CB: Es sabido por todos que Quique Setién no era la primera opción cuando se le designó entrenador, ya que Ronald Koeman y Xavi declinaron las ofertas del club. Ha conseguido ocho victorias de los doce partidos que ha dirigido, pero en esos choques su equipo solo ha marcado más de dos goles por encuentro en tres ocasiones (muy lejos de pasadas alineaciones del Barça). ¿Crees que ganar La Liga será suficiente para que Setién siga al frente?
Creo que lo han fichado para darle continuidad y veo muy buena conexión entre los jugadores y él. Las sensaciones son positivas, le veo recorrido y creo que ha encontrado un grupo ideal para poner en práctica la idea de juego que lleva dentro y toda su filosofía y su manera de entender el fútbol.
CB: Han pasado cinco años desde que el Barcelona ganara la Champions League, la escasez más larga en la era Messi. Dos de las cinco victorias del club fueron bajo el mando de Pep Guardiola, quien no ha ganado el trofeo en casi una década. Además, con el Manchester City expulsado de la Champions, su futuro parece incierto. Si el club y el entrenador se reunieran de nuevo, ¿cuál de los dos crees que tendría más que ganar?
No lo sé, ésa es una suposición muy complicada. Lo veo muy a gusto en el City, es verdad que esta circunstancia es un contratiempo importante pero le veo muy identificado con el equipo. Ha creado algo muy grande y está muy a gusto con Txiki y con Ferrán Soriano porque todos se entienden muy bien. Lo que me preguntas es una hipótesis con poco realismo, al menos inmediato.
