The sudden shuttering of the New York Cosmos has left numerous front office staff members scrambling for new work or jobs in the midst of the holiday season.
Ownership has an agreement in place to pay all their players through November, but many employees who put in work off the field all year long and over the past few years have gone unpaid for two billing cycles and face a third as the recent furloughs potentially become layoffs.
With the team’s ownership neglecting employees, some diehard Cosmos supporters are taking action to ensure that those Cosmos employees hit hardest by the recent developments are able to get through the holidays.
This is Cosmos Country has launched a GoFundMe campaign asking for any willing supporters to donate money for the affected employees.
“While so many of us wear our love for this club on our sleeves, our very livelihood isn’t determined by whether or not the Boys in Green take the field,” said the group in its press release. “Just like us, the front office employees are undeniably passionate in their love of the game. They work hard to spread the word and get fans to the games.
“The League and owners have made questionable decisions with this club. We can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube, but as supporters, a club, and a family we can right one wrong, and give what we can to ensure the families of those furloughed get the holiday they deserve.”
All funds raised will be used to purchase gift cards at online and retail outlets that will be distributed to Cosmos employees – a welcome relief this holiday season. The campaign will run until midnight on December 17. As of this post, the GoFundMe has raised nearly $2k, with a set goal of $10k.
