Oddsmakers Believe Arizona Cardinals’ Head Coaching Opening is a Two-Man Race

The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly received permission to interview Sean Payton for their head coaching opening.

The fanbase is pining for the hire, as Payton would bring a Super Bowl pedigree and a quarterback whisperer reputation to the desert.

He was originally listed as the favorite following the Cardinals’ firing of Kliff Kingsbury.

Payton’s odds to be the next Cardinals coach were unveiled at +250 at DraftKings on Tuesday and then shortened to +200 later in the day, but he has recently taken a step back. The former New Orleans Saints coach is currently listed at +300 odds to take over the Cardinals.

Vance Joseph, meanwhile, has seen his odds surge over the past couple of days. After originally opening with +1000 odds, the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator is now the co-favorite with Payton to be Arizona’s new head coach.

Arizona owner Michael Bidwill is in the midst of interviewing general manager candidates but there has not been much news about head coaching options beyond Payton and Joseph.

As such, they sit as the clear top-two candidates, as DraftKings believes any other head coach hired would be an upset. 

Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen opened with the second-best odds to be Arizona’s head coach at +650 but he has since dropped sharply. 

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich are among the other candidates whose odds have also lengthened as the sportsbook believes this could be a two-man race.
