The legalization of mobile sports betting in Massachusetts was enacted on Friday morning.
Six different operators went live, as residents of the state can now wager on a wide variety of sporting events using their phone or other mobile device.
Retail sports betting had been available since January 31, but the implementation of online sports betting will make it much easier for bettors to get in on the action.
The operators that residents of Massachusetts can currently use are as follows:
- FanDuel
- DraftKings
- BetMGM
- Caesars
- WynnBET
- Barstool
As with every other state launch, there will be a variety of sign-on bonuses for the betting sites in Massachusetts, as the competition is fierce to land customers. They are offering free promotional bets to entice users to sign up with their sportsbook.
The multitude of promotions work out nicely for bettors in Massachusetts, as they can decide which offers are right for them.
Betr, Betway, Fanatics and BallyBet are four other operators who have been granted licenses but will not be ready for launch. They are expected to join the fray down the road.
FanDuel has grabbed the largest market share in the United States, but Massachusetts will be an interesting battleground because it is the home of both DraftKings and Barstool.
Brand awareness could help them gain customers, although FanDuel is also very well-known in the state. Massachusetts has about seven million residents and the state is known for its sports fandom, so it will be interesting to see the early sign-up and betting handle numbers when they are released.
The legalization of mobile betting in Massachusetts comes right before the start of March Madness. The college basketball conferences are wrapping up their tournaments over the weekend, and the bracket will be unveiled on Sunday.
Massachusetts law allows college sports betting, but not on in-state schools. However, national tournaments like March Madness are exceptions, so residents will be able to partake in all the action.
While the Super Bowl is the biggest betting draw of the year, March Madness is also an event that gets huge betting action, and Massachusetts residents will now have the mobile betting option at their disposal.
Bettors must be 21 years of age to wager online in Massachusetts.
