The Detroit Lions have not been synonymous with good coaching throughout their history, but the betting public believes Dan Campbell is poised to do a terrific job in 2022.
Campbell has been backed heavily for Coach of the Year since the odds were revealed and has now leapfrogged several others to become the favorite to win the award.
Detroit’s second-year coach had odds of +1000 at BetMGM, which is comfortably ahead of Brian Daboll, Brandon Staley and Kevin O’Connell, who sit in a tie for the second-best odds at +1400 apiece.
Campbell opened with odds of +1600, but with 30% of the tickets and 31% of the handle on him, the odds have shifted dramatically.

📈
Dan Campbell +1600 to +1000
Robert Saleh +3000 to +2500📉
Doug Pederson +1400 to +1600
Josh McDaniels +1600 to +1800
Nick Sirianni +1600 to +2000• Highest Ticket%: Campbell 30%
• Highest Handle%: Campbell 31%— John Ewing (@johnewing) August 24, 2022
The Lions finished last season 3-13-1 and have a projected win total of only 6.5 at BetMGM, but there is some major buzz in the state of Michigan. The offense has intriguing young skill pieces and the offensive line could be among the best in the NFC.
Detroit’s odds to make the playoffs are listed at +350, and if Campbell can get his football team there, it would be some major ammunition to garner him the award.
Campbell’s personality has been on display on Hard Knocks, and while most of the votes will be determined by the play on the field, it doesn’t hurt that his profile has been raised this preseason. While seen as an old-school coach based on personality, Campbell was highly in-tune with the analytical side in his first season and should only grow there with more experience.
Add it all together, and it’s easy to understand why Campbell is such an enticing play to win Coach of the Year.
