Free agency continues to churn along, and big names will continue to sign in the coming days.
But a lot of the major movement is over, so let’s take stock of the teams that have been most affected by the additions and defections.
Here are five teams that have seen their Super Bowl odds increase or decrease substantially since DraftKings unveiled 2024 Super Bowl futures on Jan. 20, 2023.
Updated betting odds as of March 16, 2023.
New York Jets
Original Super Bowl odds: +4000
Updated Super Bowl odds: +1400
The Aaron Rodgers deal is expected to get done at some point, and with that coming down the pike, the Jets have flown from longshot Super Bowl contenders to among the favorites.
The Chiefs, 49ers, Bills, Eagles and Bengals are the only five teams with odds better than the Jets. New York had a top-5 defense last season and that unit should again dominate.
The offense struggled without a quarterback, but teaming up Rodgers with some talented young players could be a recipe for a quick ascension. The Jets haven’t been a contender for a long time, but the oddsmakers are buying the hype.
Los Angeles Rams
Original Super Bowl odds: +4000
Updated Super Bowl odds: +6000
The Rams are calling the 2023 season a “remodel” but generally that portends an upgrade, not a downgrade. That isn’t happening in Los Angeles, which has been shedding good players because of a salary cap crunch.
Cornerback Jalen Ramsey, edge rusher Leonard Floyd and linebacker Bobby Wagner are among the players that have been jettisoned.
Maybe Los Angeles can compete if Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald all have career years, but it’s going to be tough sledding after the loss of so much talent.
Chicago Bears
Original Super Bowl odds: +8000
Updated Super Bowl odds: +5000
The Bears have been busy, and the oddsmakers have taken notice. They dealt the No. 1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers and got back wide receiver D.J. Moore along with extra draft capital.
They also signed inside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker T.J. Edwards, guard Nate Davis and defensive end DeMarcus Walker.
Chicago still has copious amounts of cap space and several high picks in the draft, so the glow-up will continue. Will it be enough to push them from worst record in the NFL to Super Bowl contender?
It’s still a longshot, but less of one than it was two months ago.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Original Super Bowl odds: +3500
Updated Super Bowl odds: +6500
These odds came out before Tom Brady’s retirement announcement, so the precipitous drop is not a surprise. The Buccaneers have re-signed some of their standout veterans but let others walk.
The team still has talent, but the new quarterback will be either Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask. That is a considerable downgrade, and the Buccaneers seem to realize they are in the midst of a rebuild.
The NFC South is among the worst divisions in the NFL, but Tampa Bay still has very little shot of making noise in the conference.
Denver Broncos
Original Super Bowl odds: +4000
Updated Super Bowl odds: +2500
I’ll be honest. This one surprised me a bit. The Broncos were a mess last season, and it’s hard to know what Russell Wilson will look like in 2023.
But Denver was super active in free agency shoring up weaknesses, and Sean Payton is now the head coach following a marvelous stint with the Saints.
The Broncos still reside in the AFC West, and catapulting past the Chiefs and even the Chargers will be difficult. But the oddsmakers know Wilson has a long track record of success, and if Payton can get the most out of him, the Broncos may be able to be a post-hype sleeper team that challenges for the championship.
