The New York Mets shocked the baseball world on Tuesday night, quickly agreeing to a 12-year, $315 million contract with star infielder Carlos Correa.
The about-face for Correa, whose lucrative free agent deal with the San Francisco Giants hit a snag due to a medical issue, has created a ripple effect on World Series odds.
The Mets were listed at +1000 to win the championship before the news came down, and now those odds have shortened to +750, per DraftKings on December 21. New York is now the co-favorite to win the National League pennant, listed at +350 alongside the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The San Francisco Giants went the other way following the realization that they will now be without one of the most talented players in the game. The Giants had +3500 odds to win the World Series on Tuesday and now they sit at +5000.
Correa was expected to play for the Giants next season and beyond, but his 13-year, $350 million contract was never official because he hadn’t yet passed a physical. Once San Francisco balked, Mets owner Steve Cohen swooped in to sign another elite player.
Correa is set to play third base alongside star shortstop Francisco Lindor, and it is clear that the Mets are going to be a team to be reckoned with for the foreseeable future. Even though Jacob deGrom left in free agency, Justin Verlander was signed to replace him at the top of the rotation, and New York has also brought back several key pieces from a season ago.
