Wyoming Gambling Laws

Wyomingites have been able to take part in online and mobile sports betting in the state since September 2021. After Gov Mark Gordon signed HB 133 into law, BetMGM and DraftKings were first to launch offerings in the state and were available from day one. 

The Wyoming Gaming Commission is the body responsible for regulation and licensing of the Equality State’s gambling industry. HB 133 required the WGC hand out at least five licenses to sportsbook operators, but there’s no upper cap so choice for bettors is only set to increase. 

As for brick-and-mortar sports betting, there are no retail locations operating currently. The four casinos that operate in the state do hold the appropriate licenses to offer sports betting, should they choose to do so.

In order to bet on sports in Wyoming, you must be at least 18 years old. 

Casino

Wyoming state law does not currently regulate online casinos, so the state lies in what’s often called the ‘gray area’ — an ambiguous position where it’s illegal for operators to be based in Wyoming, but it’s not illegal for Wyoming residents to access online casinos licensed in foreign gambling jurisdictions. In any case, we at Compare.bet recommend players avoid these sites due to the lack of player protection. 

There are currently four casinos that operate in the state:

Lottery

WyoLotto is the state’s official lottery, and sells tickets for Powerball, Mega Millions, Lucky for Life, and other games. There are around 440 retailers across the state, and tickets must be purchased with cash in accordance with legislation. 

You must be 18 to buy a ticket for the lottery in Wyoming.

Gambling Tax in Wyoming

You’re likely already aware that there’s no income tax in Wyoming, and that extends to gambling winnings. However, you will have to pay federal income tax of 24% on your profits.

Sports betting operators in Wyoming must pay a 10% tax on gross revenue, with the first $300,000 going towards gambling addiction treatment programs.

NFL

The playoffs are a series of best-of-seven matches contested by the top eight teams from the eastern and western conferences, culminating in the final for the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.  

As with the NFL, Wyoming lacks an NBA team. The Denver Nuggets are a popular choice in the state, and the Wyoming Cowboys represent the state in college basketball.

NHL

Hockey is a much-loved sport across North America, and the NHL represents the best domestic league in the sport. 32 teams compete in the regular season, playing 82 games each. The playoffs are made up of the 16 most successful teams, with the final two going forward to the Stanley Cup final. 

You might have noticed a trend by now — Wyoming doesn’t currently have a team in the NHL. Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes are some alternatives to consider, with the former having won the Stanley Cup three times.

Horse Racing

Whether it’s flat, jumps, or harness, there’s a wealth of horse racing available to Wyoming bettors. On home turf, you can wager on the biggest events like the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. There are also plenty of events from across the pond too: the Grand National and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe are some high-profile international races available at Wyoming sportsbooks.

The majors — also known as Grand Slams — are where interest usually peaks, with the Australian Open in January, the French Open in May–June, Wimbledon in June–July, and the US Open in August–September.

Parlays

If you’re looking for a bigger potential win from a smaller stake, parlays are a great choice. By combining multiple different bets — or ‘legs’ — the payout can be much greater if all your bets come good. It’s an exciting way to balance risk and reward, as the more legs you have, the greater the chance of failure — but the bigger your winnings if you pick correctly.

Many bookmakers offer parlay insurance which will refund your stake if just one leg of your bet fails, somewhat lowering the risk.

Point Spreads

When you make a bet on point spread, the outcome of the bet depends on the margin by which the team you’ve backed wins or loses. 

Let’s say the Edmonton Oilers are playing the Calgary Kings and the bookie has set the point spread at 4.5. The Oilers are the favorite, so they need to win with five points or more to cover the spread. The Kings, however, merely need to lose by four points or less — or win the match outright — to cover the spread. 

It’s an exciting way to back a team that’s more complex than a simple moneyline bet. 

Prop Bets

There are all sorts of weird and wonderful prop bets — which stands for proposition — at Wyoming betting sites.
