Everything you need to know about online craps
If you’re a newcomer to the world of craps, the complex table layout might make things seem a bit confusing, but in reality, you’re simply betting on the outcome of a dice roll. It’s the huge amount of betting options that often throws newcomers off. Our quick beginner’s guide to playing craps online will teach you everything you need to know – you’ll be playing like a pro in no time!
So we know that the aim of the game is to bet on the outcome of the dice roll. Where many ‘how to play craps’ guides fall short is that they don’t explain the difference between playing land-based and online craps. Unlike games such as roulette, things aren’t exactly the same between both versions. Let’s take a look at how things play out.
The come out roll
Every new game of craps begins with what’s known as the come out roll. When playing online, you are technically classed as the ‘shooter’, so you have to place a wager before this roll takes place. You can either bet on ‘pass’ or ‘don’t pass’. Naturally, when playing offline, you’d want to bet on yourself shooting the right number. However, since you’re playing online craps, you can bet on either outcome as the computer does the rolling.
- Pass wins if the roll is a 7 or 11
- Don’t pass wins if the roll is 2 or 3 (some games include 12, but often this is referred to as a ‘push’, which sees all wagers are returned)
- Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) becomes the ‘point’. Your original wager remains on the table.
The next roll
The come out roll is pretty easy to get your head around, but it’s the next roll which often throws new players off. If your first bet was on ‘pass’ and the roll was a 4, this becomes your point number and your bet is still in play. You now need another 4 to be rolled before a 7. Essentially, your wager has flipped sides. Where you wanted to land a 7 on the come out roll, you now want to avoid it on the next roll. If you bet on ‘don’t pass’, the opposite of the rules above will apply.

More Craps Betting Options
Once you’ve passed the come out roll, a whole new world of betting options becomes available to you. The vast majority of these bets are “house bets”, where the advantage leans heavily in favour of the casino. However, there are a few exceptions, including:
Come & Don’t Come: Similar to the pass and don’t pass bets, but instead, these bets are placed after the point is established, rather than before. They also pay out at even money.
Place Win: Place win bets are made after a point has been established, following the come out roll. You can bet on any of the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. You will win if your chosen number is rolled before a 7. Your payout varies depending on which number you have chosen.
Place Lose: As the name suggests, this bet is the opposite of the place win bet. They can be placed on the same selection of numbers, but in this instance, you win if a 7 is rolled before your chosen number. Again, your payout varies depending on which number you have chosen
