What Can I Bet On?

Betting Markets

The US Open is always full of twists and turns, and there are plenty of ways you can bet on it all. Here are some of the markets you’ll find at the best betting sites in the UK.

Tournament/Match Winner US Open 2024

Who will win a title at the US Open? Will it be a veteran champion, or someone totally unexpected and unfancied? The outright winner betting markets will let you make your predictions count. Of course, you’ll also be able to bet on who’ll win individual matches throughout the tournament.

Each-way

With each-way bets, you could get a payout even if your selected player doesn’t take the title. That’s because you’ll also win some cash if, having reached the final, your chosen player comes runner up.

Set Winner

Always popular with tennis bettors, this market lets you put wagers on which players will win certain sets in a match. There’s potential here to bet on fast-starting longshots who may not be expected to win the whole match, but may come good and provide a healthy return by bagging the first set.

Correct Scores

Betting on the final scores of sets or matches is a tough ask, but the rewards can be great thanks to the longer odds. Seasoned tennis fans may enjoy trying their luck here.

Handicap Betting

When a high-ranking player takes on an intrepid journeyman, it may be too one-sided to provide an exciting gambling experience. That’s why top bookies will apply handicaps on sets or games to even things out and make for better betting.

Over/under

How many games or sets will a match stretch out for? You can bet whether it’ll be over or under a certain number with this ever-popular tennis betting market.

In-play Betting

Has play commenced before you’ve got round to making any wagers? No matter. The UK’s best betting sites will let you place your bets well into proceedings, which will ratchet up the excitement level of any tennis match. Live, or in-play, betting also provides the perk of being able to capitalise on odds changing to reflect a shift in momentum. If a top player doesn’t look to be on form, the odds on them winning may lengthen – meaning that if you bet at this point, and they do win, you’ll get a better return than if you went with the shorter pre-match odds.

Cash Out

The cash out option is a particularly inviting aspect of the top UK online betting sites. If you feel like one of your US Open bets probably won’t come good, you can trigger the cash out, and take whatever winnings you’re eligible to have at that moment – even before the outcome of the bet has been determined. Your payout is calculated by the bookmaker according to how much you put down and the live odds, and it can be a good option if you want to play things safe and not risk losing the whole stake.

Bonuses

Claim Your Bankroll Boost

Welcome bonuses are a big deal in the world of online betting. So what kinds of sign-up incentives do bookies offer to get your attention? Here are a few to consider.

Matched Deposit Bonuses

You’ll find matched deposit bonuses offered by lots of betting sites. These are promoted with lines such as “100% up to £100”. In this example, the bookmaker will match your first deposit up to a cap of £100. So, if you were to sign up and transfer £40 into your account, you’d have a total of £80 to bet with. Remember, it’s important to have a good read of the small print with these bonuses, to check what the wagering requirements and minimum odds obligations are, as well as potential time limits on using the bonus credits.

Free Bets

Imagine betting with the bookie’s own money rather than your own. It can happen with free bets. Of course, strings are attached. You’ll typically have to deposit and bet a minimum amount on minimum odds in order to unlock free bet credits, which might be given to you in one go or in several smaller incremental amounts. As ever, check the terms and conditions so you’re clear on what the wagering requirements and deadlines are.

Promotions

Take Advantage of Tennis Promos

While welcome bonuses get a lot of attention for understandable reasons, you shouldn’t overlook the appeal of on-going promotions that reward you for returning to a betting site.

Money-back Offers

Money-back offers do what they say on the tin. With this type of promotion, you’ll get a losing stake back as free bet credits – although it’s important to note there will usually be a maximum limit on how much you’ll be able to recoup. But even then, money back offers certainly make losing a bet sting a lot less.

Enhanced Odds

Whenever a big sports event like the US Open comes around, the top betting sites in the UK like to offer enhanced odds to grab punters’ attention. With these, you’ll be able to get some potentially big profits on ordinarily unattractive bets – such as wagering on a famed veteran champion to win a match against someone far lower in the rankings.

Banking

Payment Methods

With all the banking options on offer at UK bookies, you won’t have to compromise on your preferred way to deposit and withdraw funds. These include:

  • Visa and Mastercard debit cards
  • PayPal
  • Neteller
  • Skrill
  • Paysafecard
  • Bank transfer
Paypal casino logo

PayPal offers security and speed and an intuitive app - no wonder it's the UK's favourite e-wallet. Being able to deposit and withdraw without sharing your personal details with the casino provides users with an additional layer of security.

Neteller Logo

Whether you use Neteller's e-wallet or prepaid card option, you're guaranteed a fast and safe transaction. Neteller is accepted at a wide variety of online betting sites.

Paysafecard Logo

Paysafecard's prepaid card and PIN system mean you can make deposits but remain anonymous to not only your bookie, but your payment provider too. In the off chance any money is lost by accident or fraud, it's limited to the denomination of the voucher purchased.

Skrill Icon

Formerly known as Moneybookers, Skrill makes managing your money simple. It's widely accepted as a deposit and withdrawal method. You can even earn loyalty points with Skrill's 'Knect' loyalty programme.

Mobile

Bet Anywhere, Anytime

Thanks to mobile betting sites in the UK, you don’t have to be at your computer to wager on the US Open, or any other sporting event. These days, all bookies can be accessed via the web browser on your phone or tablet – you just have to go to the URL, sign in, and bet as normal. Even more convenient are native apps. These are downloaded onto your device and let you take a punt with just a few taps, whenever you want. Native apps tend to be faster and easier to use than the web app, and also provide you with push notifications, letting you know when new promotions are offered by the site.

Betting Tips

US Open Betting Tips

It almost goes without saying that fate and chance play decisive roles in the world of betting, so even putting in hours of research won’t ensure victory with your wagers. Still, it’s always a good idea to put in a bit of time reading up on the players at the US Open, so you can make the most informed choices on various betting markets.

The world rankings of the players are of limited help here. They’re too general, and tennis fans will know there are countless instances of high-ranking legends being brought low by unlikely opponents. It’s far more useful to consider the recent form of the players, and whether they’re still recovering from injuries or personal issues that affect play. Bear in mind as well that the US Open is a hard court tennis tournament, which will benefit certain players more than those who have a greater affinity for clay or grass.

Before betting on any match, be sure to look at the head-to-head stats for the players in question – what’s their track record against each other? If you’re going to try in-play betting, it can be wise to look more closely at previous performances to see how the players cope with different twists and turns that can occur in a typical game. This way, you’ll have a better idea of how to bet in-play when your player has his/her serve broken, for example.

Other Major Tennis Events

The US Open unfolds in August at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and is one of the four Grand Slams that can make or break legends. The others are:

  • The Australian Open (January, Melbourne Park)
  • The French Open, or Roland Garros (May, Stade Roland Garros)
  • Wimbledon (July, All England Club)

As well as the limelight-hogging Grand Slams, there’s a succession of other important tennis championships worth betting on. These include:

  • BNP Paribas Open (March, Indian Wells Tennis Garden)
  • The ATP Finals (November, Pala Alpitour Stadium)
  • The WTA Finals (October Shenzhen Bay Sports Center)
  • The Davis Cup (begins February, various venues)
  • The Fed Cup (begins February, various venues)
  • Tennis at the Summer Olympics
History

The History of the US Open

The US Open evolved from a previous, long-running tournament known as the US National Championships, which was first held back in 1881 at the historic Newport Casino, Rhode Island. It was almost a century later, in 1968, that professionals, as well as amateurs, were allowed to compete, ushering in the US Open proper.

Although it’s a hard court tournament now, the US Open has also been played on grass and clay during its long history. Jimmy Connors is the only champion to have won the men’s title on all three courts, with five victories to his name. Roger Federer and Pete Sampras have also won the men’s title five times, while Chris Evert and Serena Williams have taken the women’s title six times each.

Speaking of Serena, she was the focus of one of the most sensational upsets in US Open history. In 2015, the legendary champion had already won the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, and was poised to win a calendar-year Grand Slam by taking the US Open. But her dream was shattered by Roberta Vinci, who was ranked 43rd in the world and rated a 300/1 underdog in the match.

Further back in time, in 2009, another player took the crowds – and bookmakers – by surprise. This was the year that young player Juan Martin del Potro demolished Rafael Nadal on his way to the final – where he then beat Roger Federer to take the title. To take down both Nadal and Federer made del Potro the unlikely hero of the Grand Slam and would have made any punters who’d put an outright tournament winner bet on him very happy indeed.

FAQs

How do I know a betting site is safe?

The best way to guarantee a safe and fair betting experience is to restrict your betting to licensed betting sites, regulated by governing bodies, such as the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC). The UKGC ensures that licence holders are held to high standards when it comes to player safety. This means your funds will be held securely in an account separate from that of the operator or any other player. You can also expect secure payments, with industry-standard data encryption in place. Of course, we only recommend licensed sportsbooks, so you can rest easy when you choose a bookie recommended on Compare.bet.

Can I play accumulator bets on the US Open?

Yes. Tournaments are a great opportunity to place accumulator bets, especially early on in the competition when there’s a packed schedule. You can spread your bets over a day’s tennis, or even over the schedule for a week to try and land an attractive price. Of course, the higher the odds, the lower the likelihood of each outcome being successful, so make sure you do your research on form and matchups!

Which site has the best odds on the US Open?

There’s no consensus best when it comes to odds on any sport. Bookmakers price competitively, which means that if you browse around, you’ll likely find the prices on offer are pretty similar. Prices change frequently too, so it’s hard to nail down which bookie offers the best price. Of course, it’s in your best interest to find the best value. While small margins won’t make much of a difference for single bets, these will add up over time and can make a huge difference for large accumulators. Your best bet is to find the market you wish to bet on and compare across our recommended bookies.
