Scotland’s History at the Euros

Scotland’s history at the European Championship doesn’t make for great viewing. This is only their fourth ever time qualifying for the Euros. In each of their last three campaigns, they have been eliminated in the group stage and sadly this is their current most likely faith with odds of 1/2 for them to be eliminated in the group stage this year. However, there are reasons for Scottish fans to be optimistic. They finished second in their qualifying group above a talented Norway side.

Scotland Euro 2024 Group Breakdown

Scotland have been placed in Group A which will see them face host nation Germany, Hungary and Switzerland. Germany will be the heavy favourites to top this group, however, Scotland fans will be optimistic about qualifying to the knockout stages by finishing in second place, with Switzerland and Hungary arguably being worse sides than Norway who are a team Scotland finished ahead of in the qualifying group stage,

Scotland Euro 2024 Schedule

Scotland played in the first game of this year’s competition when they faced Germany at the Allianz Arena in Munich. It was a day to forget for Scotland as they were beaten 5-1. They were much better against Switzerland and came away with a 1-1 draw. This draw gives them a chance of progressing past the group however they will need to beat Hungary on June 24th.

Scotland Odds to Win Euro 2024

Scotland are obviously massive underdogs for this competition however the European Championship is used to an underdog winning the whole thing. In 1992 Denmark won the competition after failing to even qualify for it originally. However, a war in Yugoslavia ruled them out of the tournament which allowed for Denmark to qualify on ten days notice and in 2004 Greece shocked the world by beating Portugal in the final. Scotland’s odds to win this year’s Euros are 200/1.

Top Players For Scotland in Euro 2024

If Scotland want any chance of getting far in Europe this summer they will need their key players to perform at the highest level possible. They are certainly up against it but here are the key players for Scotland at Euro 2024

Andy Robertson

Just a few years ago Liverpool’s Andy Robertson was the best left-back on earth. He was fantastic to watch in both defence and attack and his partnership with fellow full-back Trent Alexander Arnold was clear to see. In recent seasons, Robertson has been nowhere near the player he once was although he is still a good player and was an important part of Liverpool’s season this year. Scotland will need Robertson to be at his best if they are to get far in this tournament.

Scott Mctominay

Manchester United midfielder Scott Mctominay has become a very crucial player for Scotland. Although he struggled to get regular game time at United this season, he has always turned up for the Tartan Army when it mattered most. He scored a double for Scotland when they managed to beat Spain 2-0 in a match that is ultimately the reason Scotland managed to qualify for this year’s tournament. Mctominay is a hard worker and has a good eye for goal considering he is a midfielder. You can bet on Scott Mctominay to win the Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament at odds of 250/1.

John Mcginn

Midfield is Scotland’s position with the most talent with the likes of Callum McGregor, Scott Mctominay and John McGinn all playing in there. John McGinn was a massive part of Aston Villa’s very successful season which saw them qualify for the Champions League. McGinn is a fantastic box-to-box midfielder who works extremely hard in both defence and attack. He is not afraid to put in a tackle and also has a good eye for goal.

Scotland Top Scorer Odds for Euro 2024

Scotland’s are lacking a good striker and are even missing their first-choice striker in Lyndon Dykes. Scott Mctominay scored plenty in the qualifying rounds and managed to get on the scoresheet against Switzerland. He can be backed at odds of 100/1 to be the Euro 2024 top goalscorer. England star Harry Kane is the current favourite to win the award with odds of 13/2 with France striker Jamal Musiala in second at 9/1.

Scotland Route to the Final

Although it seems like a stretch that Scotland will make it to the final seeing as they are favourites to go out at the group stage, anything is possible in football so I will be talking you through their potential route to the final. For this route to the final, I will be assuming that Scotland finish second in their group with Germany topping it.

Round of 16

In the round of 16, Scotland would face the runner-up of Group B. This will be one of Spain, Italy or Croatia. Any of these three nations would be a tough draw for Scotland with all three being contenders to win the tournament.

Quarter Finals

If they could get through one of those teams, their most likely quarter-final opponent would be England. This would be a highly anticipated clash due to the rivalry between the two countries. Although, Scotland would be the massive underdog for this match with England being the current favourites to win the whole tournament.

Semi-Finals

If Scotland pulled off a famous victory against England, a semi-final encounter against either The Netherlands or Belgium would await them.

Final

Although it seems nearly impossible, if Scotland were to make it past The Netherlands or Belgium their most likely opponents in the final would be Germany, Spain or Portugal. This would be a highly historic moment in Scotland’s history considering they have never made it out of the group stage of an international competition.

Expected Team Line Up for Scotland at the Euros

Steve Clark will have to pick his team perfectly if Scotland are to do well at this year’s Euros. Below I will try to predict the Scotland starting 11 for this June.

Goalkeeper

Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn will almost surely start for Scotland this summer after starting in all of the qualifier games. Zander Clark will likely be the second choice.

Defenders

I am expecting Scotland to line up with 5 at the back. Anthony Ralston will be the most likely right back despite his lack of playing time at Celtic due to the injuries of Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson. Andy Robertson will for sure start at left-back which leaves for three centre backs. Kieran Tierney will likely start there despite being more natural on the left, with Jack Hendry and Cott McKenna likely partnering him.

Midfielders

The midfield three picks itself with Celtic captain Callum McGregor, Manchester United man Scott Mctominay and Aston Villa’s John McGinn all destined to play. I also expect Billy Gilmour to play in a midfield position. Scott McTominay will likely play in a more attacking position than the other three.

Attackers

Steve Clark tends to only play one striker and I expect that striker to be Shankland due to good form. Clark would have likely preferred to play Lyndon Dykes however injury has ruled him out of the competition.

Comparing Scotland to Other Teams to Win the Euros 2024

Looking at the other teams in the competition, it is easy to see why Scotland are such a heavy underdog. The other nations simply have much more quality in their sides and although it is definitely possible for Scotland to get past their group stage for the first time, it’s hard to see them getting far in the tournament. Below I will compare this Scotland squad with some of the other teams in the tournament.

Netherlands

The Netherlands are a side filled with quality but have struggled to perform in recent international tournaments. The Netherlands’ odds to win Euro 2024 are 16/1 to win this year’s tournament. This Dutch squad is much more talented than the current Scotland squad in basically all areas of the pitch. Scotland just don’t have a world-class talent like Virgil Van Dijk that is needed to win a tournament like the European Championship.

Italy

Italy are the current holders of the competition after beating England on penalties in the final of the last tournament. However, there are currently some question marks surrounding Italy after they failed to qualify for the last World Cup. However, this Italian side is still much greater than this Scottish squad with players like Federico Chiesa being able to cause a threat to any team. Italy’s odds to win the Euros is 20/1 to win this year’s tournaments.

Portugal

This Portugal side is stacked with talent such as the likes of Rafael Leao, Bruno Fernande and Cristiano Ronaldo. In my opinion, this is a better Portugal side than the one who went on to win the European Championship in 2016. They are a far greater side than Scotland and are genuine contenders for this year’s trophy. The Portugal odds to win Euro 2024 are 6/1.
