Julian Nagelsmann will be hoping his side can take advantage of the fact they will be playing on home soil and win this years competition. A country has only won the European Championship while being on home soil three times throughout the competition’s history and none of these have happened in recent times with France being the last to do so in 1984. So far Germany have been very impressive. In their group they picked up 7 out of a possible 9 points and beat a solid Denmark side 2-0 in the Round of 16.

Germany’s History at the Euros

Germany’s history at the Euros is slightly political. As a whole country, the Germans have only won the competition once in 1996. However, West Germany went on to win the tournament twice in 1980 and 1972. For the people who say that West Germany wins count for Germany as a whole, then Germany have won the joint most amount of European Championships with Spain. Regardless of the political aspect, Germany have not been crowned winners in almost 30 years and they will be hoping to break this dry spell by winning Euro 2024. Their last campaign was very poor as they were knocked out in the Round of 16 in a tournament which saw Italy claim the top prize.

Germany Euro 2024 Group Breakdown

Germany were placed in Group A of this summer’s tournament. In this group, they came up against Scotland, Switzerland and Hungary. They impressed in this group coming in first place.

Germany Euro 2024 Schedule

After beating Denmark in the round of 16, Germany will face Spain on July 5th.

Germany Odds to Win Euro 2024

Germany are the tournament’s third favourites at 9/2. This German side will have to hope home advantage plays in their favour as I believe sides like France and England have more quality in their squad.

Top Players For Germany in Euro 2024

Even though I think there is more talent in other squads, this Germany side still have a lot of quality. If they are to have any hope of winning this tournament they will need their key players to step up on the big stage. Below are my top players to watch for Germany this summer.

Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos has come out of international retirement for this tournament (although he has announced he will be retiring from football at both club and international level this summer). Although he may not be as good as he was a few years ago, he is still a great player and will be crucial to Germany’s midfield. The Real Madrid players’ composure in midfield is second to none and his ability to dictate the play is one of the best the games ever seen. You can currently bet on Kroos to win Player of the Tournament at odds of 13/2. Kroos has been amazing so far with many people believing he could easily play at the top level for another few years.

Jamal Musiala

Germany are very lucky to have Jamal Musiala in their arsenal. The Bayern Munich man was also eligible for England however decided to represent the nation he plays his club football in. Musiala was one of the few shining lights in what was a dull season for Bayern Munich this year as he came up with ten goals and six assists in the Bundesliga. Musiala is very exciting to watch and has so far put up some great performances in the tournament. He is the second favourite for Young Player of the Tournament with odds of 9/4 with other contenders including Jude Bellingham and Lamine Yamal. Musiala has so far taken the tournament by storm and has been arguably the best player.

Joshua Kimmich

Joshua Kimmich will be a crucial part of Germany’s campaign due to his versatility. The Bayern Munich man is comfortable in both midfield and right-back which will be a great asset to Germany. I expect him to play at right-back but wouldn’t be surprised if he slotted into the midfield at times. Kimmich has been solid as ever from the right-back position for Germany and will continue to play a crucial role in their quest for the European Championship.

Germany’s Rising Star – Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has had an outstanding Bundesliga campaign and is one of the main reasons Bayer Leverkusen finished the league unbeaten. He picked up 11 goals and 12 assists in the Bundesliga campaign as well as 4 goals and 4 assists in the Europa League. He has started the tournament brilliantly and is in contention for the Young Player of the Tournament award. You can bet on Wirtz to win this award at odds of 20/1. Wirtz has been very impressive in this tournament so far.

Germany Top Scorer Odds for Euro 2024

Germany’s issue going into Euro 2024 is that they have no lethal striker. Jamal Musiala is the German with the lowest odds to come away with the Euro 2024 Golden Boot and can be backed at 11/2 after a great start to the tournament. Dutch star Cody Gakpo is the favourite to pick up the award at 9/2. Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo is the current holder of the Golden Boot and you can bet on him to win it again at odds of 40/1.

Germany Route to the Final

Germany have already confirmed qualification for the quarter finals after beating Denmark. Below I will discuss their route to the Euro 2024 final.

Quarter Finals

Germany will play Spain who have been very impressive so far this summer on July 5th. This will be a very exciting game as Spain and Germany have been the most exciting teams in the tournament so far.

Semi-Finals

If Germany can get past Spain another exciting encounter between France or Portugal awaits them.

Final

If Germany gets to the final it will likely be England they face. The three lions are going into the competition as favourites so this would be a difficult final for Germany.

Team Line Up for Germany at the Euros

Julian Nagelsmann has a tough decision ahead of him in deciding who to play as his Germany side looks to lift the European Championship trophy for a record-breaking fourth time. Below is the starting 11 he has gone with so far.

Goalkeeper

Nagelsmann has gone for Manuel Neuer as the starting goalkeeper despite his recent injury and the Bayern Munich keeper has repaid his trust by putting in some fine performances so far.

Defenders

Joshua Kimmich has started at right back for Germany rather than in midfield. In the centre, Antonio Rudiger has been paired with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah. On the left Max Mittelstadt has played every game so far.

Midfielders

A massive shock in Nagelsmann’s squad was the decision to leave out Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka. So far Toni Kroos and Dortmund man Andrich have started in deeper roles with Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan playing in a more attacking position.

Attackers

As I mentioned before, Germany do not have a lethal striker like other countries do. Kai Havertz has been chosen to play as a false nine but Niclas Fullkrug has impressed when coming off the bench. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala have been playing on the wing

Comparing Germany to Other Sides to Win the Euros 2024

If Germany have any hopes of winning this trophy, they will have to come up against some great sides. Below I will discuss some of the main teams Germany will have to get past and compare them to this German side.

Spain

Many German fans will remember the heartbreak of Euro 2008 when Spain defeated Germany 1-0 in the final due to a Fernando Torres goal. Although this Spain squad are nowhere near as good as their 2008 squad, Luis de la Fuente will be going into this competition optimistic that they can put up a good performance. His side play some good football and with many great players like Rodri and Pedri in the side, Spain could easily cause a surprise or two. Spain’s odds to win the Euros are at 4/1. Spain have been the best team in the competition so far with Germany a close second. The two sides are set to face off in the quarter final of the competition which is a bit of a shame because although this will certainly be an exciting match, it would have been good to see it in the semis or even the final.

France

World Cup finalists France are my picks to win the Euros. France’s odd to win the Euros are currently 9/2 which puts them slightly behind England. They have shown over the years that they know how to get far in international tournaments and won the World Cup in 2018. They will be looking to win this trophy after suffering the heartbreak of losing the last World Cup final. So far France have struggled in the Euros and are yet to score a goal from open play. If France can improve on this they will be serious contenders for the tournament.
