France’s History at the Euros

France have won the European Championship twice and are tied with Italy as the nation with the second most wins behind only Spain who have won the tournament three times. However, they have not won the tournament since Euro 2000 when current manager Didier Deschamps captained the team to victory. Deschamps has not won the tournament as a manager yet and will be desperate to do so this summer. France arguably should have won the Euro 2016 tournament when they lost to an average Portugal in the final despite Cristiano Ronaldo getting injured in the opening minutes. It should be of no surprise that I start off by talking about Kylian Mbappe. He is without a doubt the best player in the world in recent times. His level of talent is frightening with his electric pace and elite finishing. He has gained a lot of media attention in the last month after announcing his move to Real Madrid in what is seen as one of the biggest transfers in football history. He managed to score 27 goals in 29 league appearances this season and has scored 47 goals in 80 appearances for France. He is by far their most important player and France will need him to perform well if they are to win this summer. Mbappe can be backed to win Player of the Tournament at odds of 14/1. He broke his nose in the first game against Austria and missed out on the game against the Netherlands due to this. He is back now and has scored one goal so far in the tournament which was a penalty against Poland.

William Saliba

Although in the past Deschamps seemed to prefer Upamecano and Konate, Saliba is by far the best defender in this France squad. He was fantastic through the course of the league and if he can bring that form to the French side, France have found the perfect replacement for Varane. Although Saliba has yet to show his Arsenal form when in a French shirt, I am predicting a strong European Championship from the centre-back.

Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann has been a key part of Deschamps’ time as France manager. The Athletico Madrid man seemed to have put his career into a hard place after a poor spell at Barcelona. However, since returning to Athletico Madrid, he has picked his career right back where it was left off. He has 129 caps for France and is the nations fourth highest top scorer. He works incredibly hard for his country and often comes up with some vital goals. He is also a great playmaker and is the fourth favourite to have the most assists in the tournament at odds of 50/1. I am expecting a strong showing from the forward at this European Championship.

PSG midfielder Warren Zaire Emery has managed to get a call-up for Euro 2024 despite having only 2 international caps beforehand.
