Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe is the best player in the world. He was the top scorer at the last World Cup, including a hat trick in the final against Argentina. Mbappe has just secured his long-anticipated move to Real Madrid, so he’ll be looking to impress with the whole world watching him this summer. However, after breaking his nose in the first game of the tournament his odds have increased heavily. Mbappe returned in the final game of the group scoring a penalty against Poland.

Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham is off the back of a fantastic start to his Real Madrid career. He has taken the La Liga by storm as well as winning the Champions League. Bellingham is in a race against his club teammate Vinicius Jr for the 2024 Ballon d’Or and winning the Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament could see him as the favourite. Bellingham put up a fine performance against Serbia however was poor against Denmark and Slovenia. He was poor overall in the Round of 16 against Slovakia however managed to pull off one of the greatest moments in Euros history with a last second overhead goal to keep England in the tournament.

Harry Kane

England striker Harry Kane has had an interesting start to his time at Bayern Munich. Individually, he has been brilliant. However, the club did go trophyless for the first season in over a decade, allowing Bayer Leverkusen to win both the league and cup competition. Kane has had a fantastic career at England and is the Three Lions’ all-time top goalscorer. Like Mbappe, Kane is in contention to win the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball. Kane has been getting criticism for his current performances in the tournament despite scoring two goals so far.

Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos shocked many people when he announced retiring after the Euros. Many would have predicted this would be his last time playing for Germany; however, nobody thought he would decide to call it a day at the club level. Kroos could not possibly have retired at a better time with Madrid, bowing out after a Champions League victory. If he can do the same with his German career, and bow out after winning the Euros with his country, it would be one of the best possible ways anyone could retire from sport. Kroos will play a crucial part in Germany this summer, and with the Germans playing under home advantage, they could go very far in the competition. Kroos has been very impressive so far this tournament and is the newest favourite for the award.

Euro 1996 – Matthias Sammer – Germany

Matthias Sammer was the first Eastern-born German to represent the United German national team. Originally a midfielder, Sammer played in defence at Euro 1996, helping Germany get past their group without conceding a single goal. He scored a crucial goal in the quarter-finals, which set up a semi-final clash against England. Eventually, Germany went on to win the tournament, with no player getting more man-of-the-match awards than Sammer.

Euro 2000 – Zinedine Zidane – France

In what is known as the prime of his career, Zinedine Zidane was flawless at Euro 2000 as France ended up as the winner. He scored a crucial free-kick goal against Spain and put in a man-of-the-match performance against Portugal in the competition’s semi-finals. Although he was quiet in the final, France went on to win, with everyone agreeing Zidane was the player of the tournament.

Euro 2004 – Theodoros Zagorakis – Greece

In what will forever be one of the biggest upsets in football history, Greece won the Euros in 2004. Going into the tournament, Greece knew that they had nowhere near the amount of quality in their squad that other sides had, so they went to the competition with the idea of defending for their lives. Greece captain Theodoros Zagorakis, who had just been let go by AEK Athens and joined Bologna on a free transfer, put in multiple heroic displays, including in the final against Portugal, which Greece won 1-0.

Euro 2008 – Xavi – Spain

In 2008 Spain started what would become a period of dominance for the country by winning the Euros. They won every tournament game, including a 1-0 win against current host nation Germany. But it was Xavi who stole the show of the tournament. The Barcelona midfielder was crucial to the way in which Spain played. His passing and reading of the game were clear to see, as he dominated the midfield in just about every game.

Euro 2012 – Andres Iniesta – Spain

Four years later, Spain was the first nation to defend the European Championship. They also won a World Cup in between these years. Spain absolutely dominated the tournament. In their first game, they faced Italy in a 1-1 draw, but after the first game, Spain did not concede a single goal in the competition. Xavi’s teammate Andres Iniesta shined this time, picking up three man-of-the-match awards throughout the tournament.

Euro 2016 – Antoine Griezmann – France

Antoine Griezmann became the first player to win the Player of the Tournament award despite not being a part of the winning team since the award began in 1996. He picked up the Golden Boot that year and was by far the best player at the tournament. Griezmann was brilliant throughout the tournament. He scored a last-minute winner against Albania in the group stage, and when France found themselves 1-0 down to Ireland at halftime, Griezmann stepped up to score a brace before netting another two against Germany.

Euro 2020 – Gianluigi Donnarumma – Italy

Gianluigi Donnarumma is the only goalkeeper to win the Player of the Tournament award. He was absolutely heroic throughout the tournament and didn’t concede a single goal in the group stages. However, his finest moment came in the final. He put in a man-of-the-match display against England at Wembley, including a fantastic performance during the penalty shootout.
