England’s History at the Euros

England’s history at the Euros doesn’t make for a good viewing. They have never won the tournament with the furthest they have ever gotten being in 2021 when they finished runner-up at Wembley. In 2016 they were famously knocked out by a very weak Iceland team in the round of 16 during a tournament that turned out to be quite winnable for the Three Lions after an average Portugal side ended up as winners. In 2008 they didn’t even qualify, with Steve Mclaren’s side being knocked out during the qualification stage.

Euro 2024 Odds

This year promises to be an exciting tournament with multiple teams being in genuine contention for the trophy. Here, I will talk you through some of the top teams who are favoured for the competition and give you their latest betting odds.

England

England are currently the favourites to win the Euros. England’s team are arguably the most talented in the competition. They have a very talented and exciting young squad full of world-class players from defence to attack. Harry Kane will no doubt be seen as England’s main attacking threat but there are plenty more great threats around him such as Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka. Most betting sites are pricing England at 15/4 to win the Euros. England have been poor so far which has led to the team receiving some criticism.

France

France will come into this tournament hungry to win it having lost to Argentina in the World Cup final in 2022. They have not won the Euros since 2000 when current manager Didier Deschamps captained the side to victory as a player. France are an exciting team to watch and currently have the best player in the world, Kylian Mbappe in their arsenal. France are priced at 9/2 to win the Euros after a poor performance in their group stage. France have yet to score a goal themselves from open play yet with the team relying on penalties and own goals.

Germany

Germany are currently the third favourites to win the tournament. Host nations have gone on to win the Euros three times however this hasn’t happened since 1984 when France won the tournament at home. Germany will be hoping to break that curse there is no reason to say they can’t. They currently have one of the best young players in the world playing for them with 21 Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala choosing to play for Germany over England. He has had a great season with Bayern and could be one to watch this summer. The young talent is in the running to win this tournaments “Young Player of the Year” with odds of 9/4. Germany are priced at 9/2 to win Euro 2024. Germany have been fantastic so far in the tournament.

Spain

Spain have the joint most amount of euro titles in history and are the only country to win twice in a row. However, since they achieved this in 2012 they have not won a single international trophy. This Spanish side will be desperate to put an end to this drought and their new boss Luis de la Fuente has had a great start to his time managing the team. Spain have only lost two games since De la Fuente took charge. Spain are currently placed in the group of death with Italy and Croatia in their group. If Spain put up a good performance in their group stage there is no reason to say they can’t go on to win the whole tournament. 16-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal could be an exciting watch for this year’s tournament. Portugal

Portugal will be looking for a repeat of the 2016 Euros which they won after beating France in the final. Unless Cristiano Ronaldo decides to continue until the World Cup, this will be his final tournament internationally and I expect how Portugal fare in this competition may be the deciding factor in his decision. He will be desperate to end his international career on a high and winning the Euros this year would be the perfect way to do that. Ronaldo can be backed at 33/1 to win this years “Player of the Tournament”. This is actually a stronger Portugal side than the one who came out on top in 2016 with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Ruben Dias all coming into the side since that Euros victory. Most betting sites are pricing Portugal at around 9/1 to win the tournament.

Southgate’s English Squad

Below is the lineup Gareth Southgate has gone with at Euro 2024.

Goalkeepers

It’s of no surprise that Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is the starting keeper for England this summer. He has been a constant name in Southgate’s team over the years and is clearly someone he trusts.

Defenders

Again it’s no surprise to see Kyle Walker playing at right back for England. Similar to Pickford he has been a constant name in Southgate’s team since he got the job.

At center back John Stones is unsurprisingly starting every game however seeing Marc Guehi starting for England due to Harry Maguire’s injury comes as a bit of a shock.

At left back England have had to shoehorn Kieran Trippier out of position where he has struggled due to being right-footed. Many England fans will wonder why Luke Shaw was the only natural left back brought to Germany despite clearly being unfit.

Midfielders

Declan Rice has started every game for England however Southgate has struggled massively with finding him a suitable partner. Trent Alexander Arnold was originally experimented in midfield however it was clear to see after two games that he wasn’t capable of playing there. Conor Gallagher was then given a shot however he was a bit of a failure as well. Kobbie Mainoo then got a chance and has probably been the best fit so far however, I wouldn’t be shocked if Adam Wharton was given the opportunity to show what he can do in midfield for England. Jude Bellingham has played in an attacking midfield role and has played quite poorly other than the opening game against Serbia and a last minute goal against Slovakia to keep them in the tournament.

Forwards

Harry Kane is of course up top for England with Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka playing on the wings. All three have struggled to connect with each other and the pairing does not seem to be working. Phil Foden in particular has struggled throughout the tournament however Kane and Saka have not been great either. Both Foden and Saka are wingers who like the ball played to their feet rather than running in behind which doesn’t suit Kane who also likes to drop deep and get the ball to his feet.

Many are calling for Cole Palmer to be given a shot however, he is also a player who prefers getting the ball to his feet instead of running in behind. Anthony Gordon would be the better option if Southgate was to try something new due to his style of play and pace.

Who Will Be England’s Top Scorer?

You can bet on which England player will be the top scorer for the team. Harry Kane is currently the 1/2 favourite and this seems like a safe bet. The striker is England’s all-time top scorer and has had a good scoring season with Bayern Munich. Jude Bellingham at 7/4 is probably your next best bet as he has two goals in the tournament so far.

England’s Group Stage

England were placed in Group D in the Euros and faced Denmark, Slovenia, and Serbia. They did top this group however received some criticism for their performance.

England’s Route to the Final

England’s route to the final has become much easier than originally expected. They have somehow managed to avoid the likes of Spain, France and Germany and will instead face easier teams on their road to the final.

The Final

Should England reach this year’s final, it is likely that they will face a much harder team than they needed to on their route. France, Spain and Germany are all possible opponents.

My Prediction

There is no reason to say that England can’t win the Euros. They have arguably the best team on paper and there seems to be a good mood in the English camp. Despite this, I’m backing France to win the Euros at odds of 9/2. They have more experience than England in progressing through international tournaments and also have the best player in the world right now. It was France who knocked England out of the World Cup quarter-finals in 2022 and I predict them to get over England again this summer.

My prediction for this is Kylian Mbappe to be the top scorer.
