Tour de France Betting Explained

Arguably the most famous bike race in the world, and with a prize pool of over £2m, the Tour de France — also known as La Grande Boucle or simply as Le Tour — was established in 1903. The race takes place annually, usually in July. Cyclists participate in the Tour de France in teams, such as Israel-Premier Tech, Jumbo-Visma and UAE Team Emirates, with up to nine riders in each team. The 2023 Tour de France is scheduled for 1–23 July. The race will start in Bilbao, Spain, in an event known as the Grand Depart, before passing through France on the way to the race finish point on Champs-Élysées in Paris. 

Tour de France riders battle through 21 days of racing over 23 days and more than 2,000 miles to complete the race. Each individual racing day is known as a Tour de France stage and typically takes over five hours to finish. There are nine flat stages, seven mountain stages, three hilly stages and two individual time trials (ITT). Riders can win individual stages throughout the tour, receiving one of several special jerseys to wear in the next stage of the event, depending on which classification they are leading. These jerseys can change hands multiple times in each race before a final winner is determined, and it is possible for riders to earn the right to wear or ultimately win multiple jerseys. • General Classification – The General Classification is the main competition within the Tour de France and represents the current leader in the race. The GC leader wears a yellow vest called the maillot jaune. 
• Young Rider Classification – A secondary award in the race, the Young Rider Classification is given to the best young rider. The wearer of the corresponding white jersey is determined by their race time. 
• Mountains Classification – Known as the King of the Mountains, the Mountains Classification denotes the rider who has gained the most points by being first to the summits of mountain stages. Leaders wear a red and white polka-dot jersey. 
• Points Classification – Introduced in 1953, the Points Classification denotes the rider who is leading on points.  Riders in the top 15 finish for each stage earn points, with a green jersey denoting the current leader.
• Team Classification – The team classification is awarded to the top three riders from each team, according to their race times. Leaders wear yellow stickers, as opposed to a jersey.
• Combativity Award – Selected by a jury, the combativity award is given to the cyclist considered the most aggressive in his pursuit of victory. Recipients wear a red sticker rather than a jersey.

Also in 2022, Van Aert won the points classification with 480 points, and was named the tour’s most combative rider. 

Tadej Pogacar

Riding for UAE Team Emirates, the Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar made headlines in 2020 when he became the youngest Tour de France winner since 1904. It was an amazing feat, overshadowed only by the fact that the young cyclist went on to win the Tour again in 2021. Though prevented from claiming a TDF hattrick in 2022 by Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard, Pogacar enters the 110th edition of the Tour de France as hot favourite. Having already racked up wins at Vuelta a Andalucia and Paris-Nice in 2023, the cyclist is in top form, so the bookies could be right on this one. 

Primoz Roglic

Once a professional ski jumper, Primoz Roglic turned pro cyclist in 2012. In December, Thomas announced he would compete in the Giro d’Italia, which puts an appearance at the Tour de France in question. 

Chris Froome

Awarded an OBE for services to cycling in 2016, the British-Kenyan cyclist Chris Froome has racked up four Tour de France wins during his professional cycling career, in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. He has also triumphed in the two other Grand Tours, including Vuelta a España in 2011 and 2017 and the Giro d’Italia in 2018. Following a serious injury at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2019 and a 2022 Tour de France cut short by a Covid diagnosis, the 37-year-old Israel Premier Tech rider has described the 2023 cycling season as having the potential to be make-or-break for his career.
